What is submandibular space boundaries?

The submandibular space is a fascial space located in the neck that contains various structures such as the submandibular gland, the sublingual gland, the lingual nerve, and the hypoglossal nerve. The boundaries of the submandibular space are as follows:

  1. Anteriorly: The anterior border of the mandible separates the submandibular space from the oral cavity.

  2. Medially: The mylohyoid muscle forms the medial boundary of the submandibular space.

  3. Posteriorly: The deep cervical fascia separates the submandibular space from the carotid sheath and the prevertebral space.

  4. Superiorly: The hyoid bone separates the submandibular space from the pre-epiglottic space and the pharynx.

  5. Inferiorly: The submandibular space extends inferiorly into the sublingual space and the muscles of the floor of the mouth.

The submandibular space is important in the spread of infection and tumors from the oral cavity to the neck. This space is also commonly involved in the drainage of dental infections and salivary gland infections.
